A good Master Plan process will discover unanticipated ideas that result from the intersection of people’s experiences, best practices, and the institutions mission and goals. Each month, JCJ's Community Markets’ Team, will be publishing short, informative articles on various aspects of school planning and design. We hope these serve as a catalyst for conversation to advance awareness of the value in creating appropriately aligned, adaptable facilities for the 21st Century. Check out our first article written by JCJ's Community Markets Leader Raymond C. Bordwell, FAIA, LEED. #masterplanning #architecture #design #schoolplanning #schooldesign

Design that Builds Community
About us
Since 1936, JCJ Architecture has built a practice on the union of business and art; an integration that combines our rigorous methods of management, the high standards of design and execution our projects achieve, and the kind of service our clients require and deserve. To be of service and value to our clients, we have developed a keen understanding of their respective businesses, of the challenges they face, and of their aspirations. We approach each project with extensive knowledge of its context and purpose, and with open and inquiring minds. Our experience does not give us predetermined answers—it enables us to ask the right questions. JCJ Architecture's teams of specialists focus on certain project types and execute them exceptionally well. Each of our core markets – education, hospitality, mixed-use, public safety, corporate, performing arts, -- is led by a nationally-renowned director supported by a depth of knowledge within our studios that allows us to provide focused expertise across the country. JCJ has launched a WELL-Environment Strategies Team, which will focus on implementing the WELL Building Standard®, the first protocol of its kind to focus on the health and wellness of occupants within the built environment. This standard identifies specific design strategies, performance targets, and operational policies that can enhance health and well-being when holistically integrated into building architecture and design. This team is led by three of the world's first Provisional WELL APs, professionally trained at the Cleveland Clinic. With offices in Hartford, New York, Boston, Phoenix, San Diego, Tulsa and Las Vegas, JCJ’s talented designers are supported by a business framework that gives structured freedom to their creativity and focus to their purpose: exceeding the objectives of our clients.

Congratulations to the JCJ ARCHITECTURE Hartford Studio CANstruction team. Once again they teamed with Gideon Welles School and worked with 6th graders to feed hungry people while learning about design and construction. This year, the sixth grade student-builders from Glastonbury, CT’s Gideon Welles School selected the theme “Navigating to End World Hunger” and voted on a steamship for their sculpture. Sculpture Facts: · At 16’ long and just over 4’ high, the ship will deliver a total of 1,160 non-perishable food items to Connecticut Foodshare · The ship is 11 can-layers high and required six 4’x8’ sheets of underlayment for support between levels · This year’s most prominent color (white) is made from 400 cans of garbanzo beans. A variety of items including canned tomatoes, soup, and boxed pasta are also used! Special thanks to the JCJ core team: Tyler Barile, Maddie Kryszpin, Justin Ewing and Jordan Kazmierczak, Assoc. AIA and to all those who have lent their time and expertise throughout the year to make this season another success!

At JCJ, sustainable design is at the core of our practice and is rooted in the belief that architecture and design matter through our work. To celebrate Earth Day, we wanted to shine a spotlight on a recently completed project located in Bapchule, Arizona that serves children and families of the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). Designed to meet LEED requirements, the Casa Blanca Community School, a PK-6 Tribal Community School was designed with a high degree of reverence for the land, ecosystem, and resources, utilizing a curriculum inspired by agriculture and the surrounding environment to deliver a robust program of interdisciplinary and hands-on learning. The school’s organization, form, and features draw inspiration from practices and traditions that have sustained the GRIC, on these lands, over millennia. The JCJ designed Casa Blanca Community School is surrounded by cultivated farmland and in a region which has historically been the agricultural hub for the Akimel O’otham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) peoples. The layout of the campus takes inspiration from the agricultural fields that sustained the Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh and the canals they were so skilled in devising and constructing. Classroom cluster and core/community buildings are organized around a central ribbon of green space. The campus includes indoor and outdoor commons areas that provide each grade level cluster a space for flexible instruction. On the western edge of the campus is an integrated Agriculture-Cultural Arts-Language-Applied Arts building. This building supports an exciting and immersive program bringing together the practical, scientific, historical, and cultural underpinnings of agriculture. Raised and traditional waffle beds surround the building and are dispersed throughout the campus. To celebrate water, several features have been designed to connect students to the life sustaining cycle of rain and renewal. 📸: Chipper Hatter #Architecture #Design #SustainableDesign #EarthDay
