ConnectiCare joined iHeartRadio’s Pulse of the Region to talk about the upcoming Yoga In Our City season. The program, which originally began in Hartford, has expanded to six additional cities- New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Willimantic, New London and Middletown. The community-based program offers free classes, for every age and ability level, several times a week starting May 18 through October. Mental Health Connecticut, Inc. also joined in to discuss their support for the program by connecting communities with information about the seasonal program and how it can help lessen loneliness. It's #NursesWeek, and we're celebrating by remembering the nurses in our lives, and the extraordinary professionals who provide the highest quality care to our members. Our Vice President of Clinical Operations Karen Eckert, has a special message to share:
-
Randee Lee Hickey, director of clinical operations at ConnectiCare, participated in the Challenges Facing CT Insurance Employers panel at the 2024 Statewide Nursing and Healthcare Workforce Summit. The conversation focused on the types of clinical roles health plans offer to nurses, the challenges health plans face when recruiting and retaining talent, and what competencies health plans look for in candidates beyond clinical skill sets. Thank you to hosts Connecticut Health Council and The CT Center for Nursing Workforce, Inc. (CCNW), for the opportunity to advance this meaningful discussion.

We recently visited the Amity Teen Center (10selden) for a tour and to present them with a check for $7,500 made through the Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program. The donation will help with continued energy-efficient upgrades to the teen center in support their ongoing mission of providing a creative outlet through music and art, and after-school and summer programs to stimulate creativity, enhance self-esteem, and develop social and educational skills. Check them out at the link below.

Have you heard of Gerty Cori? She became the third woman — and the first American woman — to win a Nobel Prize in science. Perhaps you’ve never seen her name, but her research has impacted your life if you are managing diabetes. Professor Cori (1896 – 1957) was a biochemist who worked with her husband, Professor Carl Cori. They discovered a new derivative of glucose that explained the steps of carbohydrate metabolism and contributed to the understanding and treatment of diabetes and other metabolic diseases. In 1947, the couple was awarded a half share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Because of historical biases against women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), Gerty Cori was confined to the role of research associate and then associate professor of research. It was not until the team received the Nobel recognition that she was elevated to the rank of full professor.
