Event Description: TWO DESIGN PRESENTATIONS FROM MEDTRONIC R&D EXPERTS! 1. “Design for Cleanability” Presented by: John Gildersleeve, Manager, R&D Testing Services, Medtronic Recent advances in reusable endoscopes and other minimally invasive surgical instruments have brought reusable medical device cleaning challenges and dangers to the national spotlight. As a relatively new player to the complex reusable device market, Medtronic’s NPD groups are still learning about the design problems and solutions due to reprocessing. This presentation will highlight some of the known issues to help teams tackle them early on the development cycle. John Gildersleeve is Manager of R&D Testing Services, a Center of Excellence for test development, design and execution. With 25 years of testing experience with Medtronic, he is leading efforts on sharing knowledge of cleaning and sterilization practices and challenges for reusable medical devices as part of the Reliability Testing Lab. 2. “DFSS in Product Modeling” Presented by: Christopher Kaswer, MSME, Sr. Principal Engineer, Medtronic R&D Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) has been used for many years to help design quality into parts and assemblies through physical testing. As design tools advance, it is increasingly more common to find DFSS capabilities embedded within engineering design software. As medical device development becomes more competitive, it is more important to employ tools like DFSS into the product development process as soon as possible to realize the largest possible gains. A number of options are available for engineers to apply DFSS during the product development stage. In this discussion, Chris Kaswer will explore these options and share his 30+ years of expertise regarding design, analysis, manufacturing and testing and how this approach can improve product quality and design robustness.
